Funny, I guess I am frugal. I tried stepwise-replaced a part and then took the car out for a test run each time) the replacement PTU first and then the first 4 (easy to get to) spark plugs and then the first 4 (easy to get to) coilpacks...nothing resolved the problem. So I took off the balance tube and did the back plugs and packs as a pair...fixed! This identified the subset of culprits. I put my original PTU back in and car still runs fine. I marked the two coilpacks as questionable (even though they ohm out at 8) and threw away all the spark plugs I replaced.
